Pivotal

Holding space for women and girls to come together

Aug 2023 - March 2024

HOW DO I…

Make myself safer on the streets?

Intervene or support someone who’s being harassed, while being conscious of my safety?

What advice should I give to my kids?

Pivotal is a free empowerment programme, holding space for women and girls to come together, share and grow as a community. A practical space so you’ll know the actions you can take to feel safer and how to help others too. Expect deep chats, creative activities and to meet like minded locals.

To help us launch the project we’d like to get your views and opinions on several safety matters, specific to women and girls. Please spend a couple of minutes filling out the short questionnaire below.

We see the joy in his eyes as he arrives, the conflict he wasn’t able to predict, and the hope he passes down to the next generation.

Studio 3 Arts are rolling out Barking and Dagenham’s Safe Haven scheme. We are looking for businesses, venues and organisations who would like to support this important initiative. Book your place on a short online workshop or join us for a networking event soon.

We are keen for as many people, organisations, businesses and staff members across the borough to undertake and contribute their experience and knowledge to steer the second round of training as we grow the Safe Haves network.

Want to find out more or get involved?

Our online training sessions have now come to an end, but you can keep informed of future Safe Haven initiatives by registering your details using the form on the bottom of this page.

What is a Safe Haven?

A Safe Haven is a place where a member of the public can go to if they are feeling lost, being harassed or bullied, feeling unwell or generally just need some assistance. Safe Havens will be based in public spaces such as libraries, schools, community centres, independent businesses, faith spaces and will be easily recognisable through the Safe Haven Logo.

Businesses and Organisations that register as a Safe Haven can support members of the public in distress by:

  • Letting people inside who are being threatened
  • Giving the individual a space to feel safe and calm
  • Calling an emergency service, friend or family member
  • Or by simply by giving them direction or information on public transport

Priority Areas and Groups

Barking Town Centre, Dagenham Heathway and the boroughs parks and surrounding areas have been identified for the initial focus of the first phase of the scheme.

Safe Havens will support all member of the public, but particular need has been identified for the safety of women and young people.

Interested in becoming a Safe Haven?

We are now rolling out the second phase of our Safe Haven scheme across the borough. To become a Safe Haven you will need to attend a short 90 minute training session. You’ll be given support and also provided with stickers for your window.

Sign up to one of the free online training sessions during May or June now, or if you’re not sure yet and would like more information, enter your details below and a member of the team will be in touch.
